It’s simple. We rally together. When more of us take a firm stance in defending all that we value, we win. When we refuse to conform to harmful cultural norms as a community, we win.
The anti-dote is all around us! It’s in you. It’s in me. Together, we can collectively reverse the trends that are distracting us to death.
As we grow, we plan on adding more ways to get off screens and get real. Keep an eye out for up-and-coming opportunities.
This villain goes by many names: deepfakes, chatbots, doomscrolling, fake news, sextortion, nudification apps. And that’s just a warm-up list.
What hangs in the balance on this battlefield? Years of life spent unintentionally scrolling, clicking and browsing. The mental well being of every user. The social network of society. The trust we place in authority. Our peace of mind. What it means to be human.
When you push yourself, you discover there’s more to you than you realized..
The opposite of addiction is connection. No one should suffer in isolation.
We are what we focus on, so where we place it matters A LOT.
Some people have it all figured out. They’re already living IRL with great success! But even the best parents and the most disciplined individual will find something at Tame Your Tech they can’t get at home. There are three perks that are hard to pass up.
If you’re interested in helping us out, let us know! We’re looking for a variety of talents, backgrounds and insights to make this effort even more successful. What can you offer? We look forward to hearing from you.
Keep it Real will rock your world. These are power-packed community events with flare.
Our events start out with a check-in for teens and adults. They’re invited to fill out a sheet that asks them to mindfully consider their screen use and all they’ve accomplished over the past month. Volunteers within the group then review and respond to each others’ answers and mail them back through snail mail, full of individualized feedback and support.
Every person counts at these events, so we take roll each time and welcome newcomers by name. Each family or individual gets to create their own Battle Banner they’ll display during roll call. Those who are absent will be sent handwritten cards to let them know they were missed. We then play a couple of fun group games to build stronger ties and loosen up.
Our Spare Parts playground will be set up for kids to enjoy made up of crates, barrels, tires, tarps, pallets, ramps and big wooden blocks. One of our staff will lead teens in a Teen Tech Talk for a brief discussion on what they’re noticing, what they’re learning, what concerns they have and how they’re coping. Then they’re free to play games, doodle, or play other backyard activities we have set up.
Meanwhile, parents engage in a pow-wow. We talk about what’s working and not working at home when it comes to striking a healthy tech-life balance. Current updates regarding tech will be shared, and that month’s book selection will be highlighted and discussed.
To support our mission to make face-to-face time a priority, all members will get a static cling window sticker to put on a fridge or front door, marking your house as a place where you “Screen Less. Do More.”
Handmade wooden boxes will be available for purchase that can be put inside the front door with the words “Give it a Rest” burned onto the side. This is to encourage real life interactions and less tuning out while guests are in your home.
Besides all that, members will also be given discounts on our Unplugged Adventures.
Our resilience clubs are life changing. No joke. The value of these tight-knit groups can’t be overstated.
Each club focuses on getting out of default mode so you can live according to your own design. You’ll learn to be more intentional with your time as you practice aligning your screen use with your clearly defined purpose.
These clubs are for anyone looking to step it up a notch. They’re for those who are striking an ideal balance with tech as much as they’re for people glued to devices day and night. The point is to take you from where you’re at to the next level. This is most likely to happen with positive peer support in place. You’ll identify projects and skills you want to take on and decide for yourself just how far you’d like to be stretched. The group is there to cheer you on while holding you to your vision.
We have three resilience clubs to choose from.
TNT (Try New Things) is for kids ages 8-12. When we meet up we start by beating on a huge rawhide drum and shouting out our team cheer. Members perform fun skits called “Time Snatchers” about the choices we make each day and why they matter. With hands-on crafts and projects, kids get to make cool stuff that requires focus, patience, and a clear mind to complete. We follow up on previously chosen challenges that build practical skills, grit and deep focus. Kids can earn dog tags for pushing themselves in different areas and will be recognized for significant effort. These are character-based clubs with a strong emphasis on virtues such as courage, kindness and determination. Click this link if you’d like to sign your child up for a free 4-week trial.
Renegade is for teens ages 13-19. Yes, there’s a huge maturity gap between ages 13 and 19. But we have staff on hand to make sure every participant is challenged appropriately. The focus of Renegade is on rebelling against low expectations so teens can decide for themselves how far they want to stretch themselves. Unlike our kid and adult clubs, this club depends on teamwork to achieve far more than any one person could alone. Members are invited to draft up proposals that must be approved by one of our staff before presenting their idea to the group. Once approved, the teen will describe their project and ask for volunteers to fill certain roles in order to make it happen. Everyone is expected to participate on a project in either a helper or leadership role. Sessions focus on teamwork, holding our attention, meaningful discussion, building empathy, and regularly assessing screen use. One Life is for adults ages 20 and up. These sessions focus on practicing mindfulness, guarding your time more deliberately, and setting big, achievable goals. This is the place to be if you’re hoping to reclaim your attention and zero in on what really matters. It’s where you’ll actively pursue the life you long for with a close-knit group to offer feedback and encouragement along the way. You’ll be given several areas to experiment within–such as service, handiwork, research, the arts, the outdoors and fitness–as you test your comfort zone and push yourself to do more than you thought you could. When you feel ready, you’ll come up with a Life Empowerment Project proposal to be reviewed by our staff and then shared with the group. Once completed, a ceremony of celebration will be held to acknowledge your achievement. Full of fun, vulnerable moments, teamwork and challenges, the connections you make in this group will sustain you in your upward climb to personal fulfillment.
