Not on My Watch

We’re all familiar with the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Never has that been more true than it is now.

And yet, there’s some reluctance to invite anyone else into the process of raising of our children. We don’t want just anyone to interfere with that vital role.

The problem is, there are already hundreds of forces influencing our kids every time they get online–snagging their attention, with or without our approval. Those forces don’t care two cents about our kids’ welfare, their future, or their mental health. They don’t care how well our kids sleeps at night, what kind of friends they have, or how they’re treated on the bus ride home. The goal of online platforms and gaming companies comes down to one overarching objective: grab their attention, reel them in, and win their loyalty as a consumer. It’s a sham.

As caregivers, we can’t possibly compete with the algorithms vying for our children’s time.

Let’s size this up with a side-by-side comparison. On one side of the field you have a parent who keeps nagging, “Did you get those dishes done?” while on the other side is a perfectly targeted post about how to build that dream world in Minecraft that this same kid has been obsessing over. Sure, that same parent might then make the child’s favorite breakfast right before their soccer game, but at no point does the digital competitor tell the child “No, you can’t go out with your friends until your grades are up.”

From a child’s point of view, parents quickly get a ‘hard pass’ when the alternative to our demands is an online world that perfectly caters to their every interest and desire.

Online apps keep kids coming back to maintain a streak in ways a parent can never match. Think about it. Does anything you do keep your kid begging for more and faithfully responding in a predictable way to any of your requests, day after day? That’s just what many games are programmed to do, and the results are a compulsive desire to check in, no matter what.

A New Kind of Village

What if we could loosen the grip those online forces have on kids by joining a community that makes real life interaction and playful competition even more appealing? Is there a way to change the norm such that our children come to prefer offline, face-to-face living over hours spent mesmerized by a glowing screen?

With the right kind of village? Yes. It can be done.

Instead of letting our kids mingle with online ‘villagers’ of their own choosing; instead of watching their attention, emotional and social health be hi-jacked, could a different kind of in-person village align better with the vision we have for our kids’ futures?

Proud parents think they’ve got this. They can handle this on their own.

The wise parent says, “Going up against a multi-billion dollar industry will require bold moves. I’ll do anything to loosen Big Tech’s hold on my child.”

For those who want to keep their kids in a world that focuses on face-to-face relationships and embodied experiences, there’s a unique community starting a wildly fresh movement. The Keep it Real Rally is made up of those looking to get away from online distraction, disconnect and superficiality in favor of living IRL.

This powerful community is preparing kids to live in an even more tech-saturated world than the one we live in today. It’s where families band together to preserve all that it means to be human–to think for ourselves, work through messy relationships, challenge ourselves to go further, face a problem rather than run from it, and make time to sit in silence, appreciating the wonder of the natural world around us.

Once a month we gather in defense of all we value most to troubleshoot, to validate, to unite and to feel empowered to face this world of unique challenges. While the parents pow-wow, the kids build social skills and problem solve on our unique Spare Parts playground and teens engage in a Tech Talk together. Everyone old enough reflects on their screen use and accounts for where they’re at with their life’s ambitions. Members create a Battle Banner used during role call featuring all those things they don’t ever want to see compromised by screens.

Everyone is invited to a supplemental activity day each month where we hike, have a kick-ball tournament, tour a museum, play minute-to-win-it games, swim, or canoe together.

The real power comes from showing others what it looks like to start a new, healthier trend. It comes from linking arms and saying “We want our kids back!” It comes from choosing an alternate way of living in support of our overall health. It comes from being brave enough to do a major reset within our homes so we can make our family ties stronger than our online ties.

Join the ranks and take to the battlefield with us. Together, we can wake our kids (and ourselves!) back up to the living, breathing, hi-def, enriching 3-D world around us. The one that will teach and heal and help us all to build the resilience and presence of mind needed to rise above the noise and stress of our day.

Our kids are worth it! We’re worth it!

If you’ve ever watched a group of kids climb, stack, build, dig, argue, create, and collapse into giggles together, you’ve seen something magical. Real play — the messy, imaginative, hands-on kind — lights up parts of a child’s brain that screens simply can’t touch.

And yet, for many families today, those experiences are becoming rare. Kids spend more time observing than doing, more time tapping than tinkering, and more time consuming than creating.

That’s why the “Spare Parts” Play Approach is making a comeback in communities. If you’re worried about the cost of passive screen time and are ready to help your kids rediscover what their brains and bodies were built for, you’re in the right place.

Let’s explore why this kind of play matters, what “Spare Parts” play actually is, and how you can bring simple, joy-filled elements of it into your home life.

Why Play Matters More Than Ever

Kids aren’t just entertained during real play — they’re being wired for life.

Unstructured, screen-free play develops:

1. Resilience

When a tower falls, mud gets everywhere. When a plan doesn’t work out, kids learn to adapt. They try again. They adjust. They problem-solve. They don’t expect instant gratification — they build grit.

Screens, on the other hand, rarely ask kids to tolerate frustration. With one tap, everything resets. The only muscle being exercised is in thumbs and fingers.

2. Teamwork & Conflict Resolution

Playgrounds, forts, cardboard cities, and spare-parts structures require negotiation:

“How do we lift this tire way up to the top?”

“What if we turned it into a spaceship?”

“Here, I can help!”

Screens rarely teach these skills. Many games are solitary. Even online multiplayer games lack the face-to-face emotional processing that human collaboration requires.

3. Creativity & Executive Function

When kids build with ordinary objects, they’re constantly planning, envisioning, revising, sequencing, and making decisions. They’re architects, engineers, and storytellers.

Screens provide ready-made worlds — meaning fewer opportunities for kids to create on their own.

This is where “Spare Parts” play shines.

What Is the “Spare Parts” Play Approach?

The “Spare Parts” model is simple:

Kids are given a collection of real-world objects — often donated or repurposed — and complete freedom to create, build, explore, and experiment.

Think:

pallets

crates

rope

tarps

wooden planks

tires

ramps

big wooden blocks

Give kids materials + space + time, and they’ll invent entire worlds.

Within our Keep it Real community, parents are delighted by what happens when kids interact with these “spare parts”:

They collaborate again.
They disagree and problem solve.
They climb, test, fail, and rebuild.
They’re focused and determined.
Their imaginations ignite.

Kids enter a flow state that screens disrupt, and they leave calmer, more grounded, and more confident.

You don’t need a full playground to replicate these results. A few simple DIY options can unlock the same benefits.

How to Bring Spare Parts Play Into Your Home

Here are three low-effort, high-impact ways families can introduce this kind of play — starting today.

1. Create a “Spare Parts” Play Corner

This doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Start with an unused corner of a room somewhere and slowly add a variety of materials.

Ideas to include:

Cardboard boxes

Wrapping paper tubes

Empty spools

Balls of yarn

Old scarves

Bungee cord

Tennis balls

Strong Magnets

Old pulleys

Funnels

Egg cartons

Rubber bands

All kinds of tape

Empty #10 Cans

Miniature play figures

Then simply let your kids have at it.

You’ll be surprised how a pile of “boring” old objects suddenly becomes:

A superhero hideout

An obstacle course

A robot costume

A futuristic city

A battlefield

A new game to play

Screen time leads to mindless entertainment. Spare parts play leads to healthy development.

2. Host a Weekly Family Project Night

Pick one evening per week to try out this family ritual:

The rules are simple:

No screens for anyone.

Kids choose the project.

Adults are helpers — not directors.

Project ideas:

Build a fort or cardboard castle

Create a Rube Goldberg machine

Make a puppet show

Engineer a trebuchet using spoons and rubber bands

Construct an obstacle course

Invent your own board game

Do woodworking projects

When you let kids lead, something powerful happens:
They take ownership.
They feel capable.
They feel trusted.

Screens rob kids of initiative and tangible results.
Projects restore those.

3. Plan a Wild Family Excursion

Here’s something that can be done once a month, on a fair weather day.

The idea is simple. You pick a date on the calendar and decide on your budget. Then the fun begins.

What will you do?

On the given day, it starts with the roll of a die. Each number represents a different activity.

1 = hiking

2 = biking

3 = going to a body of water

4 = bouldering

5 = a historical site

6 = a museum

What will you eat?

Then you’ll roll the dice again. This time it matches the activity with the food you’ll enjoy while you’re out. Or you can vary this to decide what kind of dessert you’ll enjoy afterward.

1 = build-your-own sandwiches, chips and applesauce

2 = sliders, granola bars and fruit

3 = bagels & cream cheese, yogurt and veggies

4 = go out for pizza, sliced apples and carrots

5 = pasta salad and ice cream

6 = grilled chicken salad and rolls

Add a Specific Challenge

The final step is identifying what challenge you’d like to take on as you venture out. The focus could be on:

Being friendly and observant of those around you

Paying attention to your 5 senses

Noticing details most people would miss

Cleaning up litter as you go

Pausing for 15 minutes of silence to be fully present at some point

The goal is to try something new. Something that awakens your senses and sharpens your attention.

Discuss what each of you learned afterward.

Kids learn:
“There’s something exciting about exploring the big wide world around us — no screens attached.”

This teaches families to roll with the unexpected.
It teaches kids they’re worth your time and effort.

What You Might Notice When Kids Shift Toward Real Play

When families try this type of approach, parents notice the same results again and again:

Kids take more initiative.

They stop waiting to be entertained and start generating their own ideas.

Boredom becomes rare — and brief.

Boredom is a feeling of not knowing what to do.
Hands-on living give kids the tools to take action.

There’s more creative conversation at home.

Kids narrate their building process, debate strategies, and tell stories about what they’re noticing.

Siblings cooperate more.

Unstructured play requires roles, negotiation, and teamwork. Even rivals find ways to troubleshoot.

They default to screens less.

Because now they have another world to explore — one that is stimulating in ways the online world never will be.

And perhaps most importantly…

Kids are more grounded and emotionally regulated.

The sensory, physical, and imaginative work of exploring the world around them helps reset the nervous system — an invaluable gift in our overly-distracted culture.

Don’t Go it Alone

If you’d like more ideas — or you’d like to be part of a larger community that’s living this way on purpose — our Keep it Real monthly rally is the perfect starting point. It will serve as the perfect supplement to your ‘screen less’ mission.

When kids and parents link arms with others who are opting out of screen saturation, it feels empowering. Families get excited about this alternate way of living. They love the playful, competitive approach we take at Keep it Real. Within our community, each person matters. Everyone’s goals and accomplishments are recognized. Our focus is on the thrill of doing instead of just watching.

Let’s give kids back what screens have been stealing —
their imagination, their confidence, and their childhood.

An obvious culprit is the online world, which has become such an alluring go-to for kids, they tend to prefer it over almost any other activity.

Parents might like that their kids are home more. Within sight. “Safe,” we think. But the online world is far more dangerous than any public playground ever was. In fact, if we were to compare the online world to a playground and represent it accurately, it would look more like a scene playing out in the Colosseum around 80 AD. Back then, “the arena witnessed bloody gladiator battles, epic hunts pitting humans against wild animals, and gruesome executions of prisoners of war and criminals.” The thing is, while the Colosseum could only entertain up to 80,000 spectators at a time, it’s estimated that 6 billion people find entertainment on the internet.

While we may find it repulsive to think of 80,000 people being entertained by bloody battle reenactments and public executions, we can find far worse material online today. It’s as if any line of propriety we once held firm was pushed back–first by an inch, then by a foot, then by a mile–until the need for a line at all became obsolete.

Jonathan Haidt has referred to our screens as personal portals that can transport us anywhere. Our kids may look calm enough sitting on the leather sofa in the family room, but each of them is in a world of their own choosing, in which there are very few restraints. Children accidentally happen upon alarming material all the time. And then there are kids who use their screens to follow their curiosity until it begins to hijack their childhoods. It’s happening right under our noses.

My own daughters were in their mid-teens when they entered the smartphone world. I come from the generation of parents that didn’t know any better. While we tried repeatedly to put restraints and rules on screen use, that exposure still took a massive toll on them. In the end, it didn’t even feel like we had a say in the matter.

My middle daughter is 23 now and talks about how her use of social media all those years ago dramatically affected her body image. She says the way she sees her body has been warped by the ideal images she sees online. She doesn’t know how to look at herself objectively in the mirror anymore.

Then there’s my oldest daughter, age 25. She blames a particular app for glamorizing eating disorders and making self-harm look attractive. Although many factors played into her mental health struggles, if it hadn’t been for this app, she probably would’ve never fallen into the destructive habits she did 9 years ago. Referring to the app, she says it taught her how to do things she never would’ve known how to do.

Enter the App Store Accountability Act (SB 142). Utah and Texas are the only two states, as of yet, to have passed this bill. Instead of being blind to all that our kids might be exposed to online, this bill requires parent verification before minors can download or make in-app purchases. It takes protective measures to ensure apps are rated appropriately and holds the creators accountable if they’re not. And through SB 142, parents have the right to take action against apps with misleading or harmful content. App developers have to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), providing age-appropriate parameters within which minors can find added safety. This is a big win!

Apps are not an easy service to keep in check, but here in Utah, we’re taking a stand and drawing a firm line once again that puts children’s well-being first. There is so much they should not be exposed to. Now we have the chance to enter this global arena and put a stop to the thoughtless, unfiltered content playing out right before our children’s eyes. With the right collaborative efforts, maybe we can get them back on the playground.

Times Have Changed

It’s strange, isn’t it? To be here but not really be here?

We used to think we couldn’t be in two places at once, but through our devices, now it seems we can be. So often, we are physically in one place while mentally in another.

For those of us who grew up without the internet or smartphones, we see the change. And it’s a little disturbing at times. We don’t really notice each other anymore. Not in the way we used to. Granted, technology has made hundreds of tasks easier and opened the door for previously unimagined opportunities. It’s amazing! But our tech obsession is also taking away some things we may not have expected we’d ever lose.

Like our dependence on our elders to teach us about the ways of life. To pass along wisdom and share their stories and lessons.

Like our ability to deeply focus on one task at a time, to get lost in it for hours on end with no distractions.

If we were driving across the country, we used to stop at gas stations to ask for directions. And we used to talk to each other in doctor’s offices and checkout lines to pass the time while we waited.

Some things have been lost. But we’ve gained a lot too.

Now we never have to feel too far away from a loved one, even if they’re on the other side of the planet–thanks to our ability to connect through video calls.

If we’re sick and unable to leave the house, now we can meet with a doctor online and have a prescription filled while lying comfortably on our sofa.

We can complete a work task without missing the family vacation.

We can know if our house is secure, even if we’re 2,000 miles away. How awesome is that!

Things Lost and Things Found

We’re wired as humans to seek the path of least resistance. Sometimes, that looks like spending too much time on our phones instead of walking through the park. It can mean connecting with someone we’re on good terms with through social media to avoid dealing with the person in the next room. A lot of the time, it leads to posting and comparing and commenting on carefully curated profiles so our online self looks put together, while our actual self stagnates. Sometimes.

What if we only ever used tech in support of our own growth and well-being? Is that even possible? Has anyone succeeded in perfecting that? Not me!

But we can intend toward that ideal if we know what it is we really seek; who it is we really want to be. Once we’re clear about those two things and have the conviction to realize that vision at all costs, our screens are less likely to deter us.

For all the good they do and all the ways tech serves us, if we’re blind to the two-faced nature of our devices, it can exact a heavy toll on us in the long run.

What can be done to live in harmony with tech while not letting it rob us of the life we’re designed to live?

The answer, I believe, lies in the tree in the backyard and in the house next door.

Nature & Neighbors

Sitting under a tree, climbing a tree, planting a tree, walking among the trees along a forest path–all of these interactions can connect us with our wise and ancient Mother Earth. Grounding us to her beauty. To her steady stillness and her wild wonder. Maybe by doing so, we’ll see how neglected she has become. Maybe we’ll start to want a relationship with her and care less about our self-serving screens. In exchange, there’s a good chance she’ll help us to heal. To awaken to the secrets she has to tell. We need her influence now, perhaps more than ever.

In the houses right next door live real people with real lives, just like you. They have challenges, interests, concerns, successes and setbacks. They also live in the same self-serving world you do. They too may tend to feel invisible and unseen. They might wonder if anyone really knows what they’re going through.

What if we were to remember what it’s like to be a good neighbor? What if we were to reclaim the benefits of reaching out to those on our street such that there’s a little more trust between us? A little more watching out for each other? A little more random knocks on the door just to see how they’re really doing? What difference could that make to our quality of life? Wouldn’t it make all the difference during a power outage or natural disaster? Wouldn’t that provide a kind of built-in, free-for-the-taking sense of security? The kind that brings peace of mind. The kind that obliterates that sense of isolation and meaninglessness. Being a good neighbor pays dividends.

Get to know that tree out back. Wave next time and maybe say hi as you pass the elderly man living next door. This is how we act in silent defiance of all we want to secure for ourselves as humans. Because there are some things tech will never be able to replace.

Interestingly, Dr. Horvath pointed out that Boomers are more tech-literate than those from Gen Z. The reason for this? Because they know how to center their attention on the task at hand for extended periods of time. That’s a skill many Gen Z-ers often lack. What really matters, says Horvath, is not learning how to use a computer, but knowing how to really think. That’s the marketable skill students need most. That’s the indispensable ability necessary for lifelong success.

What’s wrong with learning from a screen?

All of us live in human bodies for a reason. Our bodies are the instruments through which we experience the world around us. In Dr. Horvath’s research, he found that reading from a screen is less effective than reading from a real book. And writing on an actual page has proven to have advantages, cognitively, over typing on a computer. This is because corporeal interactions are stimulating in ways that screen-based interactions fail to be.

Dr. Horvath also talked about the value of ‘empathetic learning’ in the classroom. When kids connect in real time with a real human teacher, learning outcomes are far more positive when compared with computer-based learning. That’s because we’re wired to interact and connect with other human beings. Brain scans reveal this is the case. Other humans hold our interest and engage our minds and senses with greater intensity and efficacy than a screen can.

The other problem with a computer-centered education is that our attention becomes fragmented. In trying to multi-task on a screen, our ability to comprehend and retain information becomes compromised. When students work from a screen in the classroom, there are many potential distractions–such as customizing their avatars, experimenting with other elements of the computer, and opening new tabs or apps. Because it’s not possible to monitor each student all the time while on their computers, kids are inefficient, quickly become bored, and are prone to spend the time exploring the capacity of the computer, rather than exploring the capacity of their own minds. Rapidly switching from one task to another makes us less able to absorb material, Dr. Horvath tells us.

So how will students learn to use a computer?

Dr. Horvath’s prompt response? “Re-introduce the computer lab.”

When teachers have to escort their classes to another room where computers are used expressly as a tool, it creates friction. According to Dr. Horvath, that’s exactly what’s needed. Schools have to intentionally work to schedule a time and space in which students can learn how to program, how to type, how to practice online awareness, etc. In this way, tech education has a specific time, place, and purpose that is distinctly separate from learning reserved for the classroom. As such, it’s less likely to inhibit the learning process.

What’s the number one way to enhance learning in a classroom?

In Dr. Horvath’s words, “Go back to 1999. Buy a printer. Go analog.” Teachers who do this may increase their workload when it comes to grading and data entry, but the results are unmistakable. As teachers revert to older methods used 20 plus years ago, learning improves. Students are more focused. Scores improve. There’s less need for the teacher to constantly redirect, and students’ interactions are more positive.

What would really improve our current educational model?

Dr. Horvath finished the conference with this memorable line: “What’s really needed isn’t digital literacy. It’s life literacy.” Teach students how to learn. How to interact with others. How to pay attention. How to expand their minds through the slow, remarkable process that has worked for thousands of years.

The bottom line? Tech has over-extended its reach within our schools, and its place in the classroom may be doing more harm than good. If that’s the case, it begs the question: What are we going to do about it?

We pick our phones up an average of 205 times a day, but we don’t usually think about what drives us to do so. There are hundreds of reasons to check them, and all of them can seem perfectly valid in the moment. But with each instance of opening our phones, there’s usually a more subtle, underlying reason behind that urge. It’s harder to spot at first, and yet being able to identify the ‘why?’ behind the reach can put us into a state of awareness that can be enlightening.

Reasons to Pay Closer Attention

Observing our smartphone use heightens our understanding of our subconscious selves, making it an empowering mindfulness technique.

Understanding the underlying urge can awaken us to whether or not getting on our phones is really necessary at that very moment.

Developing this awareness can turn compulsive screen use into more intentional screen use.

With one simple practice, we can better understand the real reasons behind that impulse to be on our phones. The first step is easy! All you have to do is attach a paper clip, sticker or key ring to your phone so that every time you pick it up, there it will be, reminding you to ask what the real need is to be on your phone right then. It will amaze you to see what’s actually lying underneath that incessant urge.

Give it a try! As you do so, you’ll likely spot patterns in yourself you didn’t know were there. You’ll not only understand yourself better, you’ll start to question what’s really best for you.

Let’s look at a few of the more obscure reasons why we want to get on our phones.

What’s Really Going On?

We’re not used to having nothing to do. The idea of just sitting there with our own thoughts might seem weird. What would happen? Can we be stuck with our own thoughts for half an hour when no other distractions are readily at hand? People generally find that to be more difficult now than it used to be.

We want to get something taken care of before we forget. Knowing how busy our minds tend to be, and in order to avoid having to think about it later, we often reach for our phones just to mentally check something off our list of things we don’t want to have to think about later.

We’re wanting to avoid an awkward or uncomfortable moment. Maybe we’re in a group of people we don’t know. Maybe we’re with people we know well, but can’t relate to. Or maybe it just feels awkward to be surrounded by people who are all on their phones and you’re not! Either way, it’s common to get on our phones so we don’t have to face whatever alternative is right in front of us.

We’re curious. We think of something–like the sports score we haven’t checked yet, the friend who said they’d send a recipe we’ve been wanting through What’sApp, or the latest news story that might explain why the flag is at half-mast. Whatever it is, with it being so easy to have the answer in an instant, reaching for our phones so often makes sense.

We want to feel we’re making the most of our time. Our culture emphasizes productivity. We often equate getting things done with personal worth, which is debatable. Regardless, some of us get a thrill out of knowing we’re staying ahead of ‘the game.’ We’re replying to email, checking in with a sick friend, transferring money in our bank accounts, finishing an online assignment. It’s satisfying to be able to stay in git ‘er done mode for as long as possible throughout the day.

You reach for your phone, see the paper clip and think, “Why do I really want to check this right now?” You notice it’s because you want to take care of something before you forget. Awesome job! Way to be aware of what’s really going on behind the scenes in your mind.

What do I have to lose by being on my phone in this moment? The light turns green. You’re only partway through with that text you wanted to send your neighbor who asked if you could watch their dogs this weekend. As you pause to ask what you have to lose if you’re on your phone right then, traffic starts moving forward and you realize you don’t want to risk having an accident to take care of this right now. It wouldn’t be worth it. So you set it down and focus on getting home safely.

It can be instructive to analyze whether your relationship with your phone is a constructive one, or if it’s interfering with the activities and balance you value most in life.

Conclusion

The ease with which we can reach for our smartphones is one thing. Whether or not it’s really worth the attention we give them as we sink time into doing whatever we wanted to do is another.
Introduction

It’s easy to assume your teen’s screen use is just a normal part of growing up in the digital age. They’re doing homework, connecting with friends, relaxing online. What’s the harm?

But beneath that glow, subtle changes in behavior and brain chemistry may be shaping who they’re becoming — and not for the better.

Here are seven warning signs your teen’s screen time might be costing more than you think — and simple ways to help them reset, recharge, and reconnect.

1. They’re Always “Tired but Wired.”

Your teen says they’re exhausted but can’t fall asleep — scrolling in bed, eyes glazed, fighting rest.

What’s happening: Screen light and digital stimulation suppress melatonin and overstimulate the nervous system. Sleep becomes shallow, delayed, or inconsistent.

What to do:

Collect devices an hour before bedtime.

Create a “wind-down ritual”: dim lighting, soft music, journaling, or quiet reading.

Teens who use screens after 9 PM average 1–2 hours less sleep than peers with evening screen curfews.

2. Their Moods Shift Unpredictably.

One minute they’re cheerful, the next withdrawn or irritable. It’s easy to chalk it up to hormones — but digital patterns can intensify mood instability.

Why it happens: Every “like,” swipe, and notification gives a dopamine hit. The brain adapts, craving constant input. Without it, teens feel restless or down.

What to do:

Build mini “digital detox” zones: breakfast, the drive to school, family dinner.

Model it yourself — leave your own phone behind occasionally.

“The highs and lows of screen use mimic addiction cycles — emotional balance returns when we unplug regularly.”

3. They’ve Lost Interest in Real-World Activities.

Soccer practice? Too tired. Hanging out? “Maybe later.” Yet they’ll play or scroll for hours online.

Why it matters: Real-world activities demand patience, effort, and delayed gratification. Screens deliver instant reward, dulling motivation for anything slower or less stimulating.

What to do:

Reintroduce slow, meaningful activities — hikes, cooking, volunteering.

Make it a family event: one “real-world outing” per week.

Family Challenge: This week, plan one device-free adventure — and let your teen help choose it.

4. Their Focus Is Slipping.

Homework takes longer than ever, and distractions are constant.

The reason: Multitasking with screens fragments attention. The brain learns to expect interruption, making sustained focus nearly impossible.

What to do:

Create a distraction-free zone (phones out of sight).

Use the “one task, one tab” rule.

Try the Pomodoro method (25 min work / 5 min break).

Students who multitask with media perform up to 20% worse on memory and comprehension tests.

5. They’re Anxious When They’re Offline.

If your teen panics without their phone or can’t relax without checking notifications — that’s dependency.

What’s happening: Teens often use devices to regulate emotion. When screens go away, unprocessed feelings surface.

What to do:

Normalize the discomfort: “It’s okay to feel restless. That’s your brain recalibrating.”

Offer alternate regulation tools — exercise, music, journaling, mindful breathing.

“Discomfort during screen breaks isn’t failure — it’s the first sign of healing.”

6. They’re Arguing More — or Withdrawing.

“Put the phone away” becomes a daily battle. Or they disappear into their room for hours.

Why this happens: Teens crave autonomy, but screens manipulate it. Interventions feel like control — when the real control has been lost to algorithms.

What to do:

Replace ultimatums with collaboration.

Ask: “What part of screen time feels hardest to manage?”

Let them help set boundaries they can own.

Parent Tip: Collaborate, don’t confiscate. Shared rule-setting reduces conflict and builds mutual respect.

7. Their Eyes Are on You — But Their Mind is Elsewhere.

They nod while you talk, but their attention is miles away. Even off-screen, their minds stay tethered to notifications.

Why it matters: Deep attention and empathy require stillness. Screens teach the opposite — rapid scanning and shallow engagement.

What to do:

Protect sacred screen-free spaces: dinner, car rides, bedtime.

Ask open-ended questions: “What’s been on your mind lately?”

Presence is a muscle — and every screen-free moment strengthens it.

The Takeaway: Awareness Comes First

If you recognized your teen in several of these signs, take heart. You’re not alone — and it’s not too late to reset. Awareness is the first and most powerful step.

At Tame Your Tech, we’ve helped families just like yours unplug from the noise and rebuild what matters: attention, calm, and connection.

Ready for a reset?

Join our free community presentation to learn practical ways to manage screen use and reconnect as a family. Reserve your spot at tame-your-tech.org

Final Thought

Imagine your teen laughing again, sleeping soundly, showing up for life instead of scrolling past it. That’s what happens when we choose connection over convenience.

Because the greatest thing your teen can reconnect with isn’t Wi-Fi. It’s you.

I was eating Sun Chips in my car at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City when something caught my eye. A guy with a really good build was lightly, gracefully crossing a slackline stretched about 100 feet from one tree to the next. His movement was mesmerizing as he worked with the bounce of the line. His rhythm was in perfect sync and when he slipped off, he had this way of getting back up that showed perfect poise. I was witnessing both an art form and a strict, athletic discipline all at once.

What compels him to do this? I wondered. And because curiosity overcame me, I approached him and conducted an on-the-spot interview. He was so good to oblige. He sat casually on the narrow line and started talking. His name, I learned, is Daniel Mulligan.

When Daniel was thirteen years old, he saw something on Instagram that would alter the course of his life. It was a video of a guy slowly traversing a thin line across a gaping gorge. He’d never seen anything like it and it had a major effect on him. He says, “I just knew, I’m doing that. One hundred percent.”

Daniel started by setting up a short slackline tied low to the ground in his backyard and using ski poles to practice his balance. Four years later, his consistent practice would find him crossing gaping canyons, following in the footsteps of the man in the video he’d seen all those years before.

When I asked Daniel what the difference is between the time he spends on a screen and his slackline time, he said, “When I’m on my phone, it’s to ignore the boredom or the itch, but slacklining and highlining are extremely fulfilling.”

His energy is different when he’s on a line as opposed to being online, he says. “This gets me fired up. This is life. Most fundamentally, this makes me feel good and tech makes me feel sh- – -y.”

I can relate.

“What’s the difference between watching someone slackline in a video and doing it yourself?” I asked.

His answer? “I’ve learned a lot from doing it as opposed to watching someone else do it. You might get a small dopamine hit from watching someone else do it, but you’re not learning anything.”

So what possesses someone to hover on a one-inch line 300 feet above a rocky canyon floor? According to Daniel, lots of things.

“This is my chosen form of meditation and training,” he says. “It makes you feel good. You have to be so focused and in the moment to do it. Particularly on a highline when it’s terrifying.”

With slacklining, there’s this balance between the risk you’re taking and being able to quiet your fear so you can place all your focus on the next foot placement. “You have to calm down to be able to walk the line, and if you’re scared, it comes out in the line. The line is a teacher. It will wobble when you’re scared.”

When we’re on our devices, no one can really tell where our minds are at or what emotional state we’re in. But when you’re walking a thin strip of woven fabric so many feet in the air, what you’re thinking and feeling are constantly visible.

“The line doesn’t lie,” Daniel says. You’re either fully present with every breath, every moment, or you’re constantly falling off the line. When you’re highlining, falling comes at a greater cost, even though you’re harnessed to the line.

Daniel’s story is fascinating. And I learned there’s a whole group of slackliners who show up at Liberty Park on Friday evenings just to be fully present with their bodies and with each other, enjoying the moment, one careful step at a time.

Maybe the next post you see won’t just be another video you watch mindlessly; maybe it’ll be just the fuel you need to kick it into gear and try what you’re seeing for yourself! But not many people turn entertainment into action. That’s what I admired so much about Daniel. He doesn’t just think, “Woah, that’s sick,” and then scroll to the next clip. Something stirred inside him that day and made him think, “I could do that.” Then he went out and made it happen.

“[Slacklining is] emotional and intense and raw. You’re not gonna get that on the couch hanging out on your phone.”

Wise words, Daniel.

What will your online viewing inspire you to do? Will you actually get out and do it? Maybe it’ll bring you to life in an exhilarating way too.
